4. Abstract

This dissertation reconceptualizes open innovation as an empirically measurable system of knowledge flows. It emphasizes how its direction (inbound vs. outbound) and structure (horizontal vs. vertical convergence) jointly determine firm performance and national competitiveness. The research consists of two empirical essays.

The first essay explores the telecommunications sector to assess how the direction of knowledge flows affects corporate financial performance. Using a long-difference regression model, the study finds that outbound diffusion, through standardization and licensing, reduces operating expenditures, particularly for upstream manufacturers. At the same time, inbound absorption enhances innovation capability but increases capital intensity and integration costs. The second examines the hydrogen industry (fuel cells and electrolysis), comparing Korea and Japan through patent-based network analyses. The results reveal that Korea exhibits application-oriented horizontal convergence, whereas Japan maintains research-oriented vertical modularity. These contrasting structures reflect institutional path dependence and differences in innovation policy orientation. By integrating these findings, the dissertation formulates a cross-level feedback mechanism in which firm-level directional strategies accumulate into national-level technological structures, while institutional architectures shape firms’ openness decisions in return. Open innovation thus emerges not as a firm-centric strategy but as a multilevel system of knowledge governance spanning micro to macro levels.
